What the Numbers Actually Mean
You have probably seen UV400 written on a product listing and nodded along without giving it too much thought. It sounds technical. It sounds like the good one. And for the most part, people assume that anything with a UV rating on the box is doing its job properly.
But then UV380 turns up. And suddenly it is less obvious which one you actually want, what the difference is, and whether it matters enough to care about.
It does matter. Quite a lot, actually. So let's get into it.
What Is UV Light, Exactly?
Before the numbers make sense, it helps to understand what you are actually protecting yourself from.
Ultraviolet light is a type of radiation produced by the sun. You cannot see it. You cannot feel it in the moment. But it causes cumulative damage to your eyes over time, in the same way it causes damage to your skin. The difference is that your eyes do not give you a warning sign the way sunburned skin does. The damage builds up quietly over years.
UV light is divided into categories based on wavelength, measured in nanometres. The two that matter for eye protection are UVA and UVB.
UVB sits at the shorter end of the UV spectrum, roughly between 280 and 315 nanometres. It is the more immediately aggressive type, associated with conditions like photokeratitis, essentially sunburn of the eye, which anyone who has spent a long day on snow or water without proper eyewear might be familiar with. Not pleasant.
UVA sits between around 315 and 400 nanometres. It penetrates more deeply and is linked to longer term damage, including contributing to cataracts and macular degeneration over time.
Both types are worth blocking. The question is how completely your lenses actually do that.
So What Does UV380 Mean?
A lens rated UV380 blocks ultraviolet light up to 380 nanometres.
That covers the majority of the UV spectrum, including all of UVB and a good portion of UVA. For a long time, UV380 was considered a reasonable standard for eye protection and many lenses on the market still carry this rating.
The issue is that UVA extends up to 400 nanometres. A UV380 lens leaves a gap between 380 and 400 nanometres where UVA radiation can still pass through. That might sound like a narrow window, and in absolute terms it is. But UV radiation in that 380 to 400 nanometre range is still capable of contributing to eye damage over time, particularly for people who spend significant time outdoors.
For casual, occasional use, UV380 is arguably adequate. But for runners, cyclists, and anyone training outdoors regularly, that gap starts to feel less acceptable when you consider how many hours of UV exposure accumulate over a season of training.
What Does UV400 Mean?
UV400 means the lens blocks all ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometres.
That covers the entire UV spectrum, including the full range of UVA and UVB. Nothing gets through. The gap that exists with UV380 lenses simply does not exist here. It is complete protection across the full range of UV radiation that reaches us at ground level.
UV400 is now the recognised benchmark for proper UV eye protection. Most reputable sports eyewear brands build to this standard as a minimum, and it is what eye health professionals recommend for anyone spending meaningful time outdoors.
The difference in the lens itself is not always visible. A UV380 lens and a UV400 lens can look identical. The lens colour might be the same, the tint might be the same, the price might even be similar. The difference is in the coating and materials, and it shows up in the specification rather than in the appearance.
This is why checking the specification actually matters rather than just assuming because a pair looks sporty or comes in a sports brand packaging.
Does Lens Darkness Affect UV Protection?
This is one of the most common misconceptions around sunglasses and it is worth clearing up properly.
A darker lens does not mean better UV protection. The two things are completely separate.
Lens darkness affects how much visible light passes through to your eye. UV protection is determined by the lens material and coating. You can have a very dark lens with poor UV protection. You can also have a lightly tinted or even a clear lens with full UV400 protection.
In fact, a very dark lens without proper UV protection can actually be more harmful than wearing nothing at all. Here is why: when your eyes are exposed to darkness, your pupils dilate to let in more light. If the dark lens is not blocking UV, your dilated pupils are now letting in more UV radiation than if you had just squinted in the sunlight without any eyewear.
It sounds counterintuitive, but the physics are straightforward. Dark does not equal protected. UV400 rated equals protected.
What About Polarised Lenses and UV Protection?
Another one worth addressing because it comes up a lot.
Polarised lenses and UV protection are not the same thing. Polarisation deals with reflected glare, specifically blocking horizontal light waves that bounce off flat surfaces like water or wet roads. It is a comfort and performance feature.
UV protection is about blocking radiation. The two features can exist together in the same lens, but one does not automatically come with the other. A polarised lens is not necessarily UV400 protected, and a UV400 lens is not necessarily polarised.
If you want both, which for outdoor training is a very sensible combination, look for lenses that specifically confirm both polarisation and UV400 protection. Do not assume one implies the other.
Why It Matters More for Runners and Outdoor Athletes
For someone who wears sunglasses occasionally, the difference between UV380 and UV400 is relatively small in practical terms. The exposure hours are low and the cumulative risk is limited.
For runners, cyclists, hikers, and anyone training outdoors regularly, the calculation is different. You might be logging ten, fifteen, twenty or more hours a week outside. Across a full year of training, those hours stack up into a significant amount of UV exposure. Over a decade of consistent training, the difference between adequate protection and complete protection starts to matter in a way it simply does not for more casual wearers.
Your eyes are not something you get a second chance with. The damage from UV exposure is cumulative and largely irreversible. Protecting them properly costs nothing extra when UV400 is built into the eyewear you are already buying for performance reasons.
The entire AVN range is built to UV400 as standard. Not because it is a marketing point, but because anything less does not make sense for people who train outdoors seriously.
The Short Version
UV380 blocks most UV light but leaves a gap in the UVA range between 380 and 400 nanometres.
UV400 blocks the complete UV spectrum with no gap at all.
Lens darkness does not equal UV protection. Polarisation does not equal UV protection. UV400 on the specification is the only thing that confirms complete protection.
If you train outside regularly, UV400 is the standard you want. It is not a premium feature or an upgrade. It is just the right baseline for anyone taking their eye health as seriously as they take the rest of their training.
And given how much effort goes into everything else, it seems a bit daft to cut corners on the thing protecting your eyes.
